SEO for Coaches: The Basics That Help People Find You on Google
Plain-English SEO for coaches and educators: what to focus on first so the right people can find your website.

Table of contents
Social media helps people discover you. Search helps people find you when they are actively looking for help. If someone types “career coach for teachers” or “online maths tutor” into Google, SEO (search engine optimisation) is what decides whether your website has a chance to appear.
You don’t need to become a technical expert. These basics cover most of what matters for a coach or educator.
1. Be clear about who you help and how
Google, like a visitor, needs to understand what you do. Your homepage and service pages should say plainly who you help, what you offer and where you work (if you work locally). Vague headlines like “Unlock your potential” don’t help anyone find you.
2. Use the words your clients use
Keyword research simply means finding out how people describe their problem. Your clients might not search for “mindset coaching”; they might search for “how to stop overthinking at work”. Use their language in your page titles, headings and content.
3. Give every page one clear job
- Each page should have a unique title and one main heading.
- Write a short meta description that explains what the page offers.
- Keep URLs short and descriptive, like /services or /book-a-call.
- Add descriptive alt text to images.
4. Make your website fast and mobile-friendly
Most visitors will see your website on a phone. Slow pages and tiny text make people leave. Compress images, avoid unnecessary plugins and check your pages on a real phone.
5. Publish helpful articles
Every article that answers a real question from your audience is another way for people to find you. Start with the questions you hear most often from clients or students. One clear, helpful article is worth more than several thin ones.
6. Set up Google Business Profile if you work locally
If you offer in-person coaching or tutoring, a Google Business Profile helps you appear in local results and on Google Maps. Keep your details accurate and ask happy clients for honest reviews.
7. Be patient and measure
SEO builds over months, not days. Connect your site to Google Search Console so you can see which searches bring people to your website, then improve the pages that are close to performing well.
